Why Travel Insurance Is Important

When to invest in travel insurance…well here is a list of times when you should consider purchasing travel insurance.

Travel insurance can be a big help when traveling on your holiday. The question, though, is when do you really need to purchase it and why?

Is travel insurance a necessity? In my experience, definitely! Last year I booked a trip to Europe as I’ve previously mentioned, and about a month before I was due to leave to go on my amazing holiday, I had to cancel. Because I had travel insurance, I was able to get back 75% of my airfare money. Yes, I know it wasn’t all of it, but it was better than not getting anything back right?

Imagine being overseas and having an accident and ending up in hospital racking up all those medical bills! Or losing your expensive camera…anything can happen. Did you know that Thailand has crazy expensive medical and hospital care? It can run into the tens of thousands of dollars, if not more! Some countries won’t even treat you if you don’t have travel insurance.

Insurance When Traveling Abroad

Whenever you travel outside of the country, you should always have travel insurance in place. It’s too easy to lose your luggage in those long trips where you often need to switch planes. But in saying that, I even buy travel insurance just when I am travelling around my own country, it’s cheap enough so why not.

You also have to consider that when you’re traveling abroad, your health insurance may not cover any medical costs that occur outside of your country.  Travel insurance will cover you for any lost items and emergency medical costs that you incur while you’re outside of your own country.

The insurance can cover a good portion of what you lost or your medical bills, so take advantage of it. It’s better to be safe than sorry in these situations.

Traveling With Expensive Equipment

If you own a laptop and plan to take it with you on your long distance trip, you should consider getting it insured. All too often, laptop owners have their laptops stolen while they’re away from their car or while you’re away from the hotel room.

Laptops are expensive to replace – like other expensive items, such as jewelry, although I think you should leave all expensive jewelry at home to be on the safe side. Travel insurance will help you recover a portion of the loss of that item, enabling you to replace it easily.

It also helps to cover the cost when an unfortunate accident occurs. It’s better to pay a little money for the insurance then to get stuck with a major loss because something happened while you were on your trip.

Planning An Expensive Trip

If you’re going on an expensive cruise, traveling abroad or flying first class on a popular airline, you should consider travel insurance. It will cover you in case something unforeseen happens.

If you have an unexpected death in the family right before you’re about to leave for your trip, the insurance will keep you from losing your money. If the airline you’ve booked a flight with all of a sudden goes bankrupt right before your trip, the insurance will cover the loss there.

Don’t assume the airline will honor your flight booking and give you a refund in the event they file bankruptcy. It’s not likely that will happen, since they’re filing bankruptcy for a reason, right?

Travel insurance can be a huge help to you anytime you travel a long distance, abroad or with expensive items. Keep your traveling investment safe by purchasing some kind of travel insurance and avoid those unforeseen things that happen which end up costing more money in the end.

Travel insurance covers many different things, so do your research and what each company offers. Decide what you really need and protect yourself the next time you plan to travel. Remember to always read the fine print too so you don’t get any surprises.

What to look for in travel insurance –

When you decide to purchase a travel insurance plan, it’s really important that you do some research before deciding which one to buy. Read through everything and don’t forget the read the fine print too. That way, you will know exactly what you are and what you are not covered for.

  1. I never used to get travel insurance…until I lost an entire suitcase full of clothes and cosmetics on a multi-stop international flight! From then on, I always include the cost of travel insurance in my budget for any trip.

I’ve also been sick a couple of times on international trips (it happens when you’re traveling on a plane – germs galore!) and insurance helped with those costs too.

No matter what your budget, getting travel insurance should be a non-negotiable. I’d rather not travel at all than take all the risks that come with not being insured, especially with the state the world is in today!

    1. Oh no, that would have been such a pain! Yes, always get travel insurance. It’s really not that expensive!
