We all know how expensive our hobby of travelling is, so here is a guide to my top travel tips and hacks to help save you money!

Money Saving Tips and Hacks

The first hack to help you save you money is when you’re searching for airfares, make sure to turn your browser to the “Incognito’ mode to find cheaper tickets. Travel sites and airlines record your visits to them by installing Cookies on your browser. They increase the prices just because they know that you have searched for those before. Rude huh?!

Another travel tip is going on a holiday off-season will definitely save you money on airfares, accommodation, tours and possibly train and ferry fares. I’m not saying go in the winter time, but going in summer will be expensive as that’s when most of the tourists go. So look at going in spring time or autumn.

Book activities and tours in advance, don’t just randomly decide you want to go to the Colosseum as you will have to queue up sometimes for a really long time. But if you book ahead days or even a few weeks before, you will get a discounted price and you don’t have to line up in the normal queue.

You can rent portable Wifi routers in quite a few countries which is great for Wifi on the go. They are much cheaper to run than your roaming charges internationally. At the end of your trip, you can post them back before you leave the country or they have drop off stations.

Keep an eye on free entry days to local attractions, museums and galleries. Quite often on the first Sunday of the month entry is free. Check their websites.

Join a Facebook page of where you are heading to, they no doubt post daily deals.

Apps To Download

Download Viber, WhatsApp and Skype as they are some great apps that let you call, send photos and instant message for free!

While you are in Wifi range, use Google Maps to download the maps of where you are headed next. When you get there, you can use the Google Maps Offline mode to check it.

Use Google Maps Offline

Download the HostelWorld app. This app makes it easy to book a wide range of accommodation and read the reviews on them. It also has a map to make it easy for you to find your booked place.

If you can’t afford to hire a tour guide, no problem! Just download Google Goggles on to your phone then take photos of the places you are in front of. Google Goggles will then tell you a bunch of cool facts about the area!

Download the Rome to Rio app to find out about public transportation, how to get to your destination and which way is the cheapest. And we like cheap!

Clever Tips and Tricks

Make sure to buy a portable phone charger for when you run out of battery power on the road. Just remember to charge to portable charger before you head out!

Use beeswax to waterproof your backpack and even shoes, just rub some beeswax on them! Or you can also line your backpack with a bin liner that way everything in your bag stays dry.

Buy yourself two wallets when you travel and keep one empty in your pocket. The other wallet you can fill with your cash and cards and wear it around your neck, leg or ankle. Why you ask? Just to confuse all the scammers and pick pockets! They really annoy me!

Make sure you take a scan of your passport and all your flight documents and then email it to yourself and also take a screenshot of it for when you have no Wifi. This trick will definitely come in handy if for some unfortunate reason you lose your passport.

Last but not least, another top travel tip is to stay at a hotel or motel where there is a kitchen so you can cook your own food. You could make your own breakfast and lunch and then go out for dinner to experience the local food. Or have lunch out as in some countries lunch is their main meal of the day. Then make yourself dinner back at the hotel with ingredients from the local supermarket.
